I have spent countless hours interviewing farmers, reading books, listening to education podcasts (while weeding), and talking with non-agricultural professionals about business and marketing strategies. It was great that I now had all this knowledge, but it is never enough.
I figured if I am going to go through all the trouble of reaching out to farmers and other professionals, why not record it and share it with others with a farm podcast? I want you to benefit from my hard work and research. I want to grow more farmers. I want you to succeed.
I love farming, plain and simple. I cannot get enough of it. I did not always know that however. I have taken a fantastically unconventional path to get where I am today. Today I am starting my own farm.
Along the way I have uncovered a few universal truths. One of those truths was revealed by my friend and fellow farm apprentice Chris. One day, while digging potatoes Chris pointed out that, "No matter who you are, or where you are in life, everyone is just trying to figure it out." Even the people who have "figured it out" are trying to figure out how they're not going to lose it all tomorrow. Those who have lost it are trying to figure out how to get it all back.
The first truth brings me to my second truth. You should never end your quest for knowledge. No one knows everything, and no one has all the answers. What works for one person will not work for others. The best you can do is gather as much information as you can and make the right decision for you.
The Growing Farms Podcast was born out of realization that I needed to figure out how to support my family by farming, and the fact that I did not have all the necessary knowledge to do just that.
Whether you have been farming for years,
you are a Homegrown Greenhorn,
or you are starting to consider a career in agriculture…
…there is something we can all do to Grow Our Farms.
