Farming - From The Ground Up

There are many reasons you might want to start a farm, or a homestead: food security, personal health, to spend more time in nature, to combat man-made climate disruption, to eat things that taste good, to create jobs, build local communities, sequester carbon, build soils, connect with the past, start a YouTube channel, write a book, slim down that waistline, spend more time with your family. These are all valid reasons to choose a path that can connect you more closely to what we put in our bodies.

This is the How-To Manual I wish I had when I started farming.

After a decade of experimentation – both on the farm, and online – I have compiled an extensive archive of materials, including research notes, photographs, videos, books, and podcasts. With more time available to me during the pandemic, I used this moment to aggregate and amplify my years of experience from farming and teaching, and create a media-rich reference library.

Do It For The Planet

Regenerative agricultural practices have been proven to reverse the effects of man-made climate disruption. That also means: we need more farmers. To train those farmers, we need to present relevant and reliable information in a way that capitalizes on today’s multi-media environment.

Every Episode in my series tells the story of small-scale agriculture through my personal experience, and features some of the many anecdotes and reference materials mentioned above. I firmly believe there is a place for agriculture in everyone’s life. That means my experience is not only replicable, but adaptable to your lifestyle.

How To Use This Resource

Consider these Episodes to be living documents. Books may last forever, but websites can be updated with current knowledge. After the initial release of the first 26 episodes, I will continue to audit and update the website, adding more information as we learn and grow together. And the best way to learn about those updates is to join my email list; you can do that here.

Tips for digesting this information:

  • Don’t feel any pressure to binge all the articles or videos; that would be a daunting task. Instead, pick and choose what interests you, and let yourself go down some of the rabbit holes I have created for you. The deep dives are fun, and will allow you to explore what you really enjoy.

  • Remember that ten years of farming is only ten seasons. I am still learning, and will be growing right alongside you. I am building this resource to organize my own notes, in a way that also will let me “share my work.” Life is a journey, not a destination.

  • Due to the fact that I am learning, too, you should always test my methods. Remember, even if my information looks polished, you should still do your own homework. I am just a guy on the internet, and so are the other people you follow.

I am excited that we are on this journey together, and I cannot wait to see where it leads. Thank you for taking the time to read my notebook. Until next time, I’ll see you out in the field.
